──────────────────────────────
Long before the rise of the new mage orders and the reconstruction of shattered nations, the dragons of Earth slept in vast silence beneath mountain roots and ocean trenches. They were ancient even before the Collapse, creatures whose memories stretched beyond human chronologies. Yet when the Rift tore open and Aether flooded the world once more, some among the slumbering dragons awakened not merely to instinct — but to vision.
Among them was Phaeton, a creature unlike the warlords of flame or the tyrants of the sky. Born in the mist-laden mountain jungles of the eastern continent, his scales shimmered deep cobalt beneath the sunless canopy. His eyes — luminous blue and endlessly reflective — did not watch the present alone. They watched what might come next.
From the moment of his awakening, Phaeton’s mind was gripped by a strange and profound awareness of time’s branching possibilities. The Aetherelite that resonated with him shaped his mind into that of an Oracle, granting him the rare and terrible gift of precognition. Futures unfolded before him like migrating flocks — countless paths rising and falling, each decision echoing into consequences far beyond mortal perception.
This knowledge did not make him merciful.
Phaeton possessed the curiosity of a scholar and the ruthlessness of a predator. He roamed the wild continents not merely to dominate territory, but to observe the unfolding evolution of the world. Human settlements, beast migrations, emerging mage enclaves — all became subjects in the long experiment of history he watched unfold.
In time he gained a reputation among the scattered druid circles and wandering mages. Some called him the Seeker of Lost Knowledge, for he often descended upon ancient ruins long before explorers could reach them, unearthing relics and lost lore buried beneath centuries of stone and jungle. Others named him the Innovator of the New Age, for Phaeton occasionally intervened in the development of young civilizations — guiding them, subtly or violently, toward futures he deemed more efficient.
But his motives were never sentimental.
Phaeton believed the world was not sacred. It was a system — one that must evolve or perish.
Where others saw tragedy in the extinction of a species or the collapse of a city, Phaeton saw necessary pruning. His precognition showed him endless possible futures, and he chose the paths that led to strength, resilience, and transformation — even if millions suffered along the way.
This cold pragmatism made him feared among mortals and beasts alike. Druids whispered that he was a dragon philosopher, a creature who judged the world not by morality but by probability. Some even accused him of nihilism, claiming that after witnessing too many possible futures, Phaeton ceased believing any individual life held meaning.
Yet paradoxically, he continued to act.
He nudged migrations of beasts that would later save ecosystems. He destroyed relics that would have unleashed catastrophe. He preserved fragments of ancient knowledge that would one day help rebuild civilization.
No one truly understood why.
Perhaps even a dragon who sees the future cannot fully escape hope.
Thus Phaeton circles the skies of the wild world — not as tyrant nor guardian, but as something stranger:
A creature who sees tomorrow before it arrives,
and decides which version of it deserves to exist.
