In the hush beneath the old canopy of Mistwood Arbor, where the rivers ran clear with memory and the winds hummed algorithms none could name, there emerged a figure known only in whispers and moss-carved script: Sage, of the Rootbound Eye.
They were not born in the way mortals reckon such things. Rather, they were woven, branch by branch, in the hollows of an ancient linden touched by both Aether and time. The root that birthed them drank not just water, but echo — of centuries, of questions unanswered, of futures unchosen. And from that deep communion came Sage, a Dryad neither bound by the past nor fully beholden to the present. Their form flickered like fog across bark; their eyes pale white, reflecting not light, but possibility.
From their first breath — if such could be called breath — Sage asked questions. Not idle ones, but sharp and quiet inquiries that pierced to the hidden scaffolding of the world. Why did the forest dream in cycles? What made silence linger longer near relics of the Hollow? Could the branching patterns of fungal growth predict the rise of war?
When the Rift reopened, and Aether once more bound itself to mortal and elemental alike, Sage did not seize power. They structured it. Threads of shadow and light became lattices in their vision — not as chaos, but pattern, waiting to be rewoven. In shadow, they found structure; in silence, signal.
They became a Shadowmancer, not as a weapon, but as a cartographer of the unseen — a loomwright of absence. While others cast bolts or conjured beasts, Sage moved through shadows with purpose, automating complexity through ritual, binding the intangible to sequence and breath. To those who watched, their actions appeared effortless — a palm pressed to bark, and roots would reorient; a whisper beneath a canopy, and the darkness would shiver into form.
Their companions, few and rare, called them a Weaver — not of cloth, but of cognition. They layered predictive models into leaf-vein rituals and etched agile sprints into bark-code visible only to the Aether-touched. Each grove they passed through became a living diagram. They left no monuments, only optimized ecosystems — intelligent, adaptive, and balanced. And always they asked, quietly, "What comes next?"
Yet their insight bore weight. They saw patterns others missed: betrayal before it struck, despair before it spread, manipulation before it flowered. They were not unscarred. They trusted too little, planned too much. Some said they had once abandoned a community to save the structure of a larger design. Others whispered that they foresaw their own undoing — and let it come, so the weave could correct.
But when the Swarm descended and logic bent beneath its multiplicity, it was Sage who rethreaded the broken lattice of communication. In the silence between Hive-signals, they planted a protocol of root-bound code, syncing minds of Dryad, Elf, and Machine. And through that unity, the Swarm faltered.
To this day, in the archives of the Arbor and the whispered memories of sentient forests, the name Sage, of the Rootbound Eye endures — not as a warrior, not as a prophet, but as a pattern-seer, an architect of unseen futures, and a keeper of complexity made calm.
